As the morning brightness gave way to a cloudy twilight , the Veliath household had all its members breathlessly anticipating the arrival of the newborn. Kaveriamma, the loyal midwife, who also substituded as a maid-chaperone for the much in pain - mother to be was holding her mistress's hand tightly. The flame on the lantern wick was dancing as if it sensed a rythm in the pain and anxiety sorrounding the dimly lit room. it was getting darker and people huddled around the father, trying to console him. Quite ironic for a sorrounding waiting to celeberate the arrival of a newborn - for it gave the air a errie whiff of death!
The old westmister clock on the verandah wallwas striking 9pm. The midwife signalled the helper to get the hotwater - time has come and no haste shall be made, lest there should be a terrible accident. Afterall, the family was waiting for thier first child...
Ammini finally arrived to the much delight of a parent who is to lose her hearing and husband ten ten days from today.
What the turn of the 19th century has in store for the kochu(little)Ammini is yet to be seen, for it was defenitely going to change the face of the new world and newly gained life...
